Can Machine Learning Elevate the New Xbox and PlayStation 6? [VIDEO]

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series didn’t end up being the technological leap forward we’d hoped for, and Sony and Microsoft’s next-generation hardware could change that.

 

Neither the PlayStation 6 nor its Xbox Series successor have been announced yet, but Microsoft has hinted that it will be the biggest technological leap the Redmond-based company has ever made (we doubt it, though, as the step between the Xbox and Xbox 360 was not insignificant). According to the editors of Digital Foundry, Microsoft already has what it takes to make this big leap.

They think that machine (deep) learning will be the key to the PlayStation 6 (at least we can guess the name here) and the new Xbox (no chance here). We could see this technology in PC and console hardware. Examples include Nvidia’s DLSS, powered by machine learning, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution in the yet-to-be-announced but soon-to-be-revealed PlayStation 5 Pro. Applications currently being researched (for material and texture quality, possibly geometry enhancement) could help make the big leap forward, allowing new hardware to run games at true 4K resolution with a 60fps frame rate. This is something that the current generation of consoles has not quite achieved…

For this reason, Digital Foundry has also stated that the marketing for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X has been exaggerated, as 4K/60 FPS can only be achieved if the game doesn’t show more than the visual quality of the PlayStation 4/Xbox One. This is due to a lack of GPU bandwidth. Many of the features that were hyped before launch have remained unused because they would be too expensive to implement.

This is not to say that the PlayStation 6 and the new Xbox will not be an improvement. But we’ve also written about how great advances come at a price…
