Astro Bot: Could the Protagonist Become PlayStation’s Official Mascot? [VIDEO]

What might have been Crash Bandicoot (or Spyro) in the 1990s could now be Captain Bot as the face of PlayStation, in the same way that Mario represents Nintendo and Sonic represents SEGA.

It’s as if Sony has put all its eggs in the Astro Bot basket, as Sony Interactive Entertainment has changed the profile picture (and header image) across all social platforms to the PlayStation 5 exclusive released on Friday. Twitter, Instagram and Facebook also made the change shortly after Friday’s release. In the game, Captain Bot goes on a rescue mission to save his team members after an alien attack. There are many iconic PlayStation cameos throughout the game, and we reported the other day that at least two were missing.

Astro Bot (because his name wasn’t always Captain Bot!) made his debut in 2013’s The Playroom. The experience, which came standard on all PlayStation 4s, showed off what Sony’s previous-gen console was capable of, and in 2018, the little bot got a bigger game, starring in the PlayStation VR-exclusive Astro Bot Rescue Mission. That was followed by 2020’s Astro’s Playroom, which came standard on all PlayStation 5s. Team Asobi hasn’t forgotten about this game either…

When Astro Bot was released, a launch party was held in Astro’s Playroom. When the countdown clock reached ten seconds, all the robots started counting down loudly, and at midnight, fireworks and celebrations began, with the bot of the player who recorded the video dancing while the others celebrated. This is another way that Team Asobi is showing that they want to create a serious franchise. And so Astro Bot can truly be the face of PlayStation in the same way that Master Chief represented Xbox on Xbox and Xbox 360. (How will the Halo franchise bounce back after Halo Infinite?)

In any case, Astro Bot has been a huge success, and we can only wonder how many awards Team Asobi’s game will win in the next twelve months…
