XWine1: Run Xbox One Games on PC!

This will finally make several games that were originally only released for Xbox One playable on PC, including some titles from major franchises.

For a few years after 2013, Microsoft didn’t take the same stance as the Redmond-based company does today. While it’s now common practice that there are no literal Xbox exclusives (all games made by Xbox Game Studios are released for console and PC), back then it was taken very seriously that if something was Xbox exclusive, it didn’t automatically mean a PC port.

And there are plenty of games that are still only available on Xbox One today, such as Halo 5: Guardians, Rare Replay, Crimson Dragon, Forza Motorsport 5, Powerstar Golf, Space Jam: A New Legacy – The Game, Forza Motorsport 6, Forza Horizon 2, CrossfireX, and many more… so Halo 5: Guardians, or maybe the two Forza episodes, might be the ones some people want to try on PC, but don’t want to get an Xbox One (or Xbox Series) just for those few titles.

On Twitter, the XWine1 account has popped up and revealed that an Xbox One translation layer for PC is in the works, which currently runs the six games just mentioned with excellence. Unfortunately, this technology is not yet available to the public, and even if it is, we don’t see much chance of developers open-sourcing their work.

Halo 5: Guardians can be played anywhere that supports Xbox Cloud Gaming, formerly known as xCloud (which requires an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription), and running previous console generation exclusives on PC is looking better and better. We’ve reported several times on how well Bloodborne is starting to run on the PlayStation 4 emulator ShadPS4.

Hopefully XWine1 will be available to try as soon as possible… and we also hope that Microsoft doesn’t take legal action against it.
