Days Gone Director Angrily Reacts to Game’s Cameo in Astro Bot

It’s a bit amazing how John Garvin, director of the open-world zombie survival game, reacted to the fact that Team Asobi managed to squeeze Days Gone into their platformer of the most notable PlayStation IPs…

From Days Gone, the main character Deacon Lee St. John (or Deek, as Garvin calls him) was referenced in Astro Bot, as one of the robots to be rescued looks like him. It’s understandable that the game made a guest appearance in Team Asobi’s hugely successful game (which reportedly sold as many retail copies in the UK as Concord sold worldwide…), as Bend Studio is also a member of PlayStation Studios.

And Garvin’s reaction was excellent (but we wouldn’t call it professional…). First he disappointedly tweeted that he was a bit sad that Deek was only good for promoting other games, then he sarcastically congratulated his former employer (he doesn’t work at Bend anymore) for preserving their legacy. In an attempt to reassure a fan, he wrote that it was not rude to see his character reduced to a cartoon-like spokesperson for a small game, and then added that the Twitter user criticizing him should sit down because the adults were talking.

Then someone else started getting on Garvin’s nerves, and he wrote three times, “And what did YOU do? Garvin doesn’t know Astro Bot, and while he wishes them well, he doesn’t wish them well at the expense of Days Gone. So that seems a bit biased on his part. In any case, the truth is that Astro Bot’s ratings are much higher than Days Gone’s, and the sales will probably crush Bend Studio’s results in the future. This isn’t the first time Garvin has freaked out. In 2022, he had a tweet (since deleted) describing why Days Gone got bad reviews: “woke reviewers who couldn’t handle a gruff white biker looking at his date’s ass”…

Not much to add to that…
