You can get the PlayStation 5 and DualSense for less, but it won’t be available everywhere and it won’t be a brand new piece of hardware for your money.
PlayStation Direct has introduced a new section called Certified Refurbished, which is essentially the same option Sony is offering as Valve’s Steam Deck. If you don’t want to buy a brand new PlayStation 5, or even a DualSense controller, you can buy a used one. The refurbished products have been sent back to Sony for various reasons (either the product was defective, or they opened the box but changed their mind and sent it back instead, so it can’t be sold as new anymore…), so you won’t get something brand new and unopened.
Push Square has reported that there is no release date for the refurbished PlayStation 5 models in the US yet, but over there the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will cost $350 and the model with a Blu-ray drive will cost $400. Overseas, you can also buy refurbished DualSense controllers for $60/$65 (depending on color). After that, we quickly visited the Austrian PlayStation Direct (because there’s no PS Direct for us…) and came across something different.
In Austria, only one version of the PlayStation 5 is being sold as a refurbished version for €450, which is a hundred euros cheaper than the €550 price for the normal model. We don’t see any DualSense controllers being refurbished, so our region will certainly miss out on this opportunity. According to Sony, the refurbished PlayStation 5 has been thoroughly cleaned and tested, and we’ll get a product that’s like new with authentic PlayStation spare parts. We’ll also get all the necessary accessories, cables and manuals, and it will come in its own unique packaging. We’ll also get a twelve-month warranty on the console, but it might be cosmetically imperfect.
Interesting timing: just after the announcement of the already overpriced PlayStation 5 Pro, the refurbished consoles are unveiled… is a price hike coming?
