And with that, the publisher has confirmed that Project Rene is not exactly The Sims 5, because something else will come out of it…
Electronic Arts announced at their investor day that The Sims 5 is no longer in development. There are no plans for a sequel to The Sims 4, even though it is the longest running episode of the franchise. The first The Sims was released 25 years ago and will continue to receive free and paid content updates. Project Rene is not going away: it will be a different kind of multiplayer project in the world of The Sims. They will also be working with several The Sims content creators to make unique in-game content available in Electronic Arts’ digital store. We’ve seen something like this before with The Sims 3.
Kate Gorman said they didn’t want to do it in The Sims 5 because it would make players start all over again after The Sims 4, which has over 80 million players and an active social media community. Gorman says that the previous episodes took the place of the previous products at launch. Recently, Electronic Arts confirmed in a blog post that major fixes are coming to the game, something many players have been asking the publisher for. A base game update will arrive before the October add-on. More of Life and Death will be shown on October 3, ahead of its release on October 31. In addition to the tarot, it may include new stances and abilities.
In an interview with Variety, the publisher even talked about the fact that we’ll be hearing more about Project Rene soon. The Sims team has been working on it for years. This isn’t the first time something multiplayer has been made from the IP, as The Sims Online was something like this back in 2002 (that failed experiment was shut down in 2008).
So it looks like they won’t be able to monetize The Sims 5 like they did The Sims 4…
