If this rumor is true, it’s safe to say that Square Enix might have more important priorities…
On the 4chan forums, it has been revealed that Square Enix is planning a remaster of the Lightning Trilogy. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, we’ll clarify it right away: it’s the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. The price is the best way to describe the greed of the Japanese company: the three games would be available in a bundle for $130, and if you bought them individually, they would cost $50 each! Even though these games were released 11-15 years ago, it would be a bit expensive!
Square Enix knows this, so they say that if you have the games on PC or Xbox (Xbox 360), you can buy them at a significant discount. The games are rumored to run at 4K resolution with 60 FPS frame rate. There would be better graphics, better textures and extra graphical effects in the remasters, which would include all the DLC (even the Mass Effect costumes in XIII-2?). The PlayStation 5 versions would have DualSense support, and there would be an original version of the soundtrack and a remastered version. There would also be quality of life features: you could speed up battles (which was really useful in the Nintendo Switch version of Final Fantasy VII-VIII-IX, for example), skip random battles (in XIII-2), and level up characters easily. So it would make grinding easier.
Final Fantasy XIII was first released in December 2009 (Japan, PlayStation 3; Xbox 360 version released in 2010, PC version released in 2014), Final Fantasy XIII-2 was first released in December 2011 (Japan again, but this time on PS3 and X360; PC version released again in 2014), while Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII debuted in November 2013 (Japan, PS3/X360; PC version came out in December 2015). Final Fantasy XIII Remastered Trilogy is scheduled to be released in early 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.
But it’s not official yet!
