Why The Sims’ Biggest Rival, inZOI, Exists – And Why Its Director Left MMORPGs Behind

The Sims‘ “big rival,” inZOI, was born because its director spent 24 years making MMORPG games. “I was tired,” he confessed.

Hyungjun Kim, the director of inZOI, was inspired to work on the project after his son asked him a simple yet thought-provoking question: “Why has there never been a true competitor to The Sims?”

Krafton is aiming to make waves in the life-simulation genre with inZOI, often dubbed as The Sims‘ greatest rival. The game is set to take on the giants EA and Maxis by emphasizing realism in character creation and life management. But where did this sudden passion for life simulation games come from? According to Hyungjun Kim, inZOI only exists because he grew tired of developing MMORPG titles after spending years working on games like Aion and Elyion.

Kim shared this insight during an interview with Stephen Totilo for Game File (via GamesRadar+). “I’ve been developing games for 24 years, and I’ve spent much of that time working on MMORPGs.” After many years in the genre, Kim grew weary of the same projects. “I got tired,” he admitted.

Despite his fatigue with MMORPGs, Kim found new inspiration when his son posed the question: Why has no one created a strong competitor to The Sims in over two decades? And more importantly, could Kim be the one to make such a game? Motivated by his son’s question, Kim decided to step away from the world of MMORPGs and begin something entirely new.

inZOI’s character editor impresses everyone

Last August, Krafton released a demo showcasing inZOI‘s character editor. Although this demo did not allow players to manage the lives of the ‘zois,’ the community still invested countless hours into it. With so many customization options available, the creative possibilities are nearly limitless. In fact, players have already recreated celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Michael Jackson in the game.
