TECH NEWS – So the Google Glass-style glasses will call home to use the pictures and videos they take…
The Facebook-Ray Ban pairing sounds a bit unusual, but it’s happening, and TechCrunch reported on it. Pictures and videos taken by the Ray Ban smart glasses will be processed by the device’s Meta AI devices, and this will include voice commands to the glasses. All of this will be used to train Mark Zuckerberg’s AI models, unless we ban them, but these days who knows if we’ll actually opt out of their program… maybe we will, maybe we won’t.
The Ray Ban glasses have a small camera in the frame and can be activated by voice. It has several features based on Meta’s AI models. How will the data transmitted be stored and used? Well, Zuck’s company has not given a concrete answer to that, but Meta has stated that where multimodal AI is available (this currently applies to the US and Canada), Meta’s AI will be trained with the images and videos we capture.
Meta’s privacy policy also states that voice commands are also recorded, and again, Zuckerberg’s company uses this for training purposes in a similar way. At least we can safely opt out when we create our Meta AI account. Regardless, the glasses will cost $300, but who knows how much data Meta could get its hands on while we spend time with our family and friends wearing Ray Ban glasses. (And how much data will have to be moved to Meta’s servers? We dare not even think about it.)
Two Harvard students have hacked the smart glasses and added a search engine that can find out data about anyone based on facial recognition alone. And who knows if this isn’t factory installed on the Meta side? This is exactly why it’s best to stay away from these devices.
