Tequila Works: Layoffs and a Canceled Game!

The Spanish studio hasn’t escaped a very common situation these days that affects every team in the games industry in one way or another.

On LinkedIn, the studio announced that it was working on an unannounced game that had to be canceled (no reason given). “This difficult decision means that we will be restructuring the studio to focus on the development of a single game. These changes will affect a small number of roles at the studio. This is an incredibly difficult time and our focus is to provide support and guidance to those affected,” the studio wrote, so they had to let some people go.

There are other games from the studio. There’s Deadlight (2012; PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Xbox 360), The Sexy Brutale (developed by Cavalier Games Studios; 2017; PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC), Rime (2017; PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC), The Invisible Hours (2017; PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC), Wonderworlds (developed by Glowmade; 2017; iOS), Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son (2019; PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive), Gylt (2019; originally a Google Stadia exclusive, but since released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One), and Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story (2023; PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch).

In 2022, Tequila Works received an undisclosed investment from Chinese tech giant Tencent to help the studio grow and develop more original IP. Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story was published by Riot Forge. The publisher of the spin-off of the popular MOBA was shut down in January when Riot Forge laid off 530 employees.

It seems like not a week goes by without news of some studio laying off staff. Hopefully we’re coming to the end of this, but where is the light at the end of the tunnel?
