Everwild’s Development: Is Rare Finally Making Progress? [VIDEO]

It seems that Rare is not only able to achieve relative success with their Sea of Thieves expansion, but that their next project is also progressing at a decent pace.

Everwild was announced by Rare a long time ago, at X019 in 2019, so it’s been five years since we officially heard about the game, which looked a lot like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It was promised at the time to feature new modes of play in a magical world, and the demo video showed players making friends with the animals instead of hunting them down. It wasn’t very deep, and not for nothing, as in July 2020, Rare’s Craig Duncan admitted that they were still brainstorming ideas for the game:

“I think with Everwild, Louise O’Connor and her leadership team are really passionate about giving players a world that they can just get lost in – you know, a lot of nature feels magical. So the idea of, “What does it mean to care for a world? What does it mean to be in nature? Part of the reason we haven’t talked a lot about Everwild is because we’re still figuring out a lot of those things. We’re still playing around with gameplay ideas,” Duncan said.

As of 2021, things started to get overly pessimistic. VGC reported that they had restarted development and there had been a lot of significant changes to the team. Gregg Mayles, the director of Sea of Thieves, joined the project as creative director, and they optimistically predicted that they would have the game ready by 2024, but that didn’t happen.

In comparison, Windows Central editor Jez Corden spoke briefly but optimistically about the game on the Xbox Two podcast, saying that Everwild’s development is going well. They’ve hit the gameplay loop, and we’re going to see some of that in the future. Of course, that doesn’t say when: maybe at the Game Awards in December, maybe at the Xbox Developer Direct in January? Or if not then, maybe in June at the Xbox Games Showcase?

At least we will see it soon, which is not bad.
