The director of Space Marine 2 says it would be “the holy grail” of Warhammer 40K gaming but thinks it’s impossible to achieve…
This year, we finally got to play one of the most anticipated Warhammer 40K projects: Space Marine 2. The continuation of Relic Entertainment’s former success, this time from Saber Interactive, with all its faults, attracted a lot of players. However, as far as future content is concerned, the creators will handle PvE and PvP modes separately; there are no plans to merge the two.
Saber Interactive has revealed that there are no plans to introduce a PvEvP mode in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, despite its growing popularity among players. The game has been performing steadily, with over two million copies sold since its release, prompting the developer to consider future projects. However, game director Dmitry Grigorenko emphasized that PvEvP would be the “perfect” mode, the “holy grail” of game design, but it is not in the immediate plans.
The creative explained that while the combination of PvP and PvE sounds appealing in theory, its implementation is extremely complicated.
Currently, Space Marine 2 offers a PvE experience in the campaign and Operations game modes, as well as PvP through the Combat Arena and Eternal War modes. The lack of a hybrid mode is largely due to the balancing challenges of integrating the two playstyles.
“The truth is that it’s a very very difficult task,” Grigorenko said, noting that balancing combat between players and AI-controlled opponents can be problematic. “it’s very annoying when you fight other players only to get back-stabbed by an AI opponent,” he added, prompting many studios to keep PvP and PvE modes separate to avoid player frustration.
Despite the absence of a PvEvP mode, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 players can expect exciting new features. The developer has confirmed that a Horde mode will be launched in 2025 as part of Season 4, along with new Operations, enemies, PvP modes and expansions for the Battle Barge. This post-release schedule promises to keep the game fresh and exciting for fans of the franchise.
The director of Space Marine 2 is already working on the new stories
In an interview, Tim Willits, the studio’s chief operating officer, confirmed that Grigorenko had already proposed ideas for expanding the game’s narrative. However, these are still only in the preliminary stage. The team is excited about the future possibilities, as the success of Space Marine 2 has encouraged Saber Interactive to consider expanding the franchise with additional content and possibly a sequel. Assuming, of course, that they get the green light from Games Workshop. Willits assured fans that the studio will not disappoint, emphasizing that they intend to continue exploring the Warhammer 40K universe.
