We also hear how Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a big improvement over Sony’s half-generation console.
Digital Foundry editors have been discussing the PlayStation 5 Pro in their weekly podcast. One of the editors, John Linneman, was at the Tokyo Game Show and spoke with a Sony representative there. He asked him about VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and whether LFC (Low Frame Rate Compensation) could be implemented on the PlayStation 5 Pro.
A Sony spokesperson said that VRR has not been tampered with, so the PlayStation 5 Pro will offer the same as the base model, but feedback suggests that this could change in the future, in which case the base PS5 would also get the upgrade. The biggest obstacle would be the 60Hz output, which would prevent high quality LFC. Therefore, at launch, VRR will be available on the PlayStation 5 Pro at between 48 and 120 Hz.
Linneman tried out the PlayStation 5 Pro at the event and says the improvements were much more noticeable in person than in the footage he’s shown so far. He said Final Fantasy VII Rebirth showed significant improvements on the more powerful PlayStation 5, and with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Square Enix’s game “lifts a veil of smudging,” as the game was extremely ugly in performance mode on the base PS5. Upscaling gives you clear 4K with crisp image quality. In PSSR, Gran Turismo 7 hit 60 fps with ray traced reflections and looked nice even at a reduced base resolution. The 8K mode can’t be downscaled to 4K, but that may change so you can get even nicer visuals.
The PlayStation 5 Pro will be available on November 7th for $700/€800. It doesn’t include a Blu-ray drive (the console doesn’t come standard with one), and a vertical stand is available separately.
