God of War: Why No Remasters of Kratos’ Previous Adventures?

According to one indication, there are no major projects on the horizon, so the first installments of God of War may not get remastered.

It has been revealed on Reddit that the PlayStation Plus tab on the PlayStation 5 has been updated to make it easier to navigate to the games available on Sony’s subscription service. One change was that classic emulated titles were separated by system, with an icon assigned to each game. This is important for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, as the most expensive PlayStation Plus category is where the retro games are available, and it’s not expanding at a very fast pace, even though Sony has a huge internally developed lineup to draw from…

The PlayStation 2 section features a Greek-era Kratos icon, even though there isn’t a single God of War in the category. This means there will be no remasters (and who knows how much demand there would be for that), but instead Sony can just take the two games and throw the first two adventures of Kratos into PlayStation Plus Premium. We’ve seen this schedule before with another game… which one?

Regina, the main character in Dino Crisis, was the icon, and later Capcom’s game appeared on PlayStation Plus Premium (not so long ago, actually…), but it took two years for Capcom’s PS1 game to appear on Sony’s service. (We dread to think what took so long… emulation, legal permissions?) Surely it won’t be such a slow process for Kratos?

None of this is official yet, but it makes all the previous rumors moot. At the time we wrote that the Greek era of God of War might be remastered, but now we can forget about it. For that to happen, Sony would have to invest a lot more resources into reworking the Santa Monica studio’s previous titles, and at the moment we don’t see much chance of that happening.
