The first PS5 price hike in Korea was in August 2022, and then Sony announced the price increase in other regions as well.
The latest console generation has been around for four years now, and there are many consumers around the world who have experienced up to two price increases for the PS5. Quite a few players have become frustrated with the device’s ever-increasing price, which has created an atmosphere of concern and discontent in the community. Many feel that access to the current generation is becoming increasingly limited. It was recently confirmed that Sony had announced a price hike for the PS5 in Japan, which did not go down well with Japanese gamers at all.
Unfortunately, after the success of Stellar Blade and Lies of P, Korean gamers, a growing market for consoles, will be the ones facing another PS5 price hike. Sony announced via the PlayStation Blog that from October 24th, it is preparing to increase the price of the PlayStation 5 in South Korea, which means that the Japanese company’s platform will be more expensive again.
A global hike accompanied the 2022 South Korean price hike, so again, this is possible.
The company is aware that this is a difficult and unpleasant decision for the players. However, Sony explained that this is a necessary measure to address current business challenges. “Due to the recent fluctuations in the global economic situation, various business difficulties have arisen, and we have been forced to make difficult decisions” – they say (after VGChartz). That said, they say they will work to improve the player experience. “We will continue to do our best to provide the best gaming experience to our customers and maintain a stable service.”
Sony raises the price of the PS5 in Korea
The first PS5 price increase in Korea was in August 2022. At that time, Sony also announced the increase in other regions, such as Europe. At the moment, Korean gamers can see in stores that the PS5 with disc drive costs 748,000 won, which is equivalent to 523 euros. The digital edition is 598,000 won. On the other hand, when it was released in Korea, the PS5 disc cost 628,000 won, i.e. 439 euros at today’s exchange rate. The digital version was 498,000 won, equivalent to 348.60 euros. Unfortunately, this trend is also typical on a global level, so there is a chance that Sony will soon raise prices in Europe as well…
