According to SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists), more and more companies and games are signing on to the agreements.
According to SAG-AFTRA, the central point of contention was the union’s demand for adequate input, compensation and transparency regarding the use of artificial intelligence for all members working on the contract. With 49 companies having already signed on to the terms, SAG-AFTRA said that the fact that these new contracts include the same common-sense, basic AI protections that SAG-AFTRA members are seeking in the Interactive Media Agreement proves that the provisions are fair and workable and will provide job security for members during the work stoppage.
“Humane protections for actors against AI exploitation are not an unreasonable ask – and the success of these contracts shows that most companies agree. They are eager to adopt basic, ethical guidelines around this tool – along with equitable accommodation – in order to work with professional talent. And talent is equally eager and happy to work with companies that respect them,” said Sarah Elmaleh, chair of the Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Committee.
“We’ve signed over 120 deals and there’s no sign of it slowing down. When we return to the bargaining table tomorrow, I hope we can reach agreement on our Interactive Media Agreement, but if not, we will continue to work with those companies that are willing to agree to fair, ethical and responsible contract terms, including the use of artificial intelligence,” added SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.
Last week, SAG-AFTRA agreed to resume negotiations after three months of strikes and walkouts. According to a statement, they will meet with a negotiating team that includes representatives from Activision, Blindlight, Disney Character Voices, Electronic Arts, Formosa Interactive, Insomniac Games, Llama Productions, Take-Two and WB Games.
So things are starting to settle down.
