The SilentPatch is available for Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and now it’s got a big update.
Silent is known for several patches: he fixed the product placements in Crazy Taxi (and the analog controls are much better), and he also… “yellowed” Deus Ex: Human Revolution. But it’s the classic PS2 GTA trilogy that most people will know him for. As Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas celebrated its 20th birthday yesterday (yes, it was released in North America on October 26, 2004 for PS2!), it received a major update with SilentPatch, which has also been made open source.
SilentPatch fixes a lot of bugs on PC that weren’t in the original console version. This is not for the Definitive Edition versions, but for the original trio. For example, the new update fixes the problem of a car exploding twice if you jump out of it in time. It also brings back what we could see on the PS2 (randomly): some drivers wouldn’t turn on their lights in rain or fog, and the metallic things on your car now shine instead of just looking weirdly matte. The credits scroll at a decent speed (slower on higher resolutions), and text leaves the screen at a decent rate when the mission is complete (again, this was resolution dependent).
Grand Theft Auto III has normal sitting and driving animations, so Claude doesn’t sink into the seat (or under it), pedestrians jump away from your vehicle instead of in front of it, and severed limbs use the correct model, so you don’t have two hands on a severed arm. NPC drivers can now turn right on one-way streets (they couldn’t before). Rendering in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City has been improved: the parts of objects you couldn’t see were previously extremely buggy. For example, car windows or parts of Tommy’s collar were missing (to save memory). The machine gun muzzle flash now points in the right direction, and SilentPatch has included another patch that improves how much pedestrians and Tommy talk to each other. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, CJ’s clothes on the quad move in the same way as if he were on a motorcycle, and the jetpack can also be used to hover with the keyboard (Q+E by default). The weird black falling dots have also been removed, and they’re not UFOs, but the textures from the clouds were used incorrectly (a wrong part was used), so now everything is white and you can see shooting stars instead.
