Marvel’s Wolverine Faces New Challenge: Rival Hires Creative Director!

Insomniac Games may have lost one of its senior developers, but the Sony-owned studio has already named a replacement for its next project.

Brian Horton was named creative director of Sony Interactive Entertainment and Insomniac Games in 2021, a role he held on the then-announced Marvel’s Wolverine. He has been out of the loop since the summer and has just made it official that he has moved to the rival, now serving as creative director of Xbox Game Studios and The Initiative. Game File reported about it.

Marvel’s Wolverine will now be led by Marcus Smith, a Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson confirmed to Game File. Current director Cameron Christian will continue his work under Insomniac Games, but in a different role. He will be replaced by Mike Daly. Smith previously served as creative director on Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, while Daly served as lead designer on Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and then director on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

According to Game File’s sources, the changes to the Marvel’s Wolverine team are the result of creative decisions made around the game. A spokesperson for Sony Interactive Entertainment declined to give a reason. Horton has therefore moved to The Initiative, which is working on the Perfect Dark reboot. The studio, previously known as the Elite Squad, has a new addition, and a Microsoft spokesperson said that his experience will be a big help for Perfect Dark (a game also being worked on by Crystal Dynamics).

Marvel’s Wolverine is expected to be released sometime in 2025 for PlayStation 5 (the PC port will definitely come later), while Perfect Dark will be released for Xbox Series and PC (and will of course be available on Xbox Game Pass). Neither has an official release date yet.
