At the 2024 Global Mobile Broadband Forum in Istanbul, organized by Huawei Technologies, over a thousand industry leaders and mobile network operators gathered to discuss the future of mobile artificial intelligence (AI). According to Huawei Chairman Ken Hu, “Future mobile networks and devices will play a crucial role in integrating AI into our daily lives.” Li Peng, Senior Vice President of Huawei, emphasized the need for network operators to prepare their infrastructures for AI integration to fully leverage new technological possibilities. The forum featured various AI-powered innovations, allowing attendees to experience firsthand the potential of future mobile experiences.
The 15th Global Mobile Broadband Forum centered on the era of mobile AI powered by 5.5G technology. The event, held on October 30-31 in collaboration with the GSM Association (GSMA) and the Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI), attracted over a thousand participants, including mobile network providers and key players from the industry. “In the future, AI will change everything. It will be accessible to everyone, anywhere, anytime,” Hu remarked in his opening speech. The 2024 year is seen as a pivotal point for the rollout of 5.5G, coinciding with an unprecedented advance in AI, transforming both daily lives and workplaces globally.
Preparing Networks for the AI Era
Li Peng, Senior Vice President of Huawei and President of ICT Sales and Services, highlighted the importance of network readiness in the age of mobile AI: “The era of mobile AI has arrived,” he stated. “New forms of interaction and intelligent services are emerging, fundamentally reshaping traffic models.” Peng showcased examples of how operators can capitalize on growth opportunities by adapting service infrastructures and operational models with AI support. Current tests on 5.5G networks demonstrate AI-based services ranging from personal use to home applications and business solutions.
Future Technologies on Display
The forum in Istanbul featured an exhibit where visitors explored innovative connectivity possibilities among smart networks, homes, and vehicles. Multimodal devices presented at the event process and analyze different data types simultaneously, offering a richer user experience. Attendees witnessed AI-driven smartphones, smart glasses, humanoid technologies, and real-time AI translation tools, reflecting AI’s expanding applicability. The venue had continuous 5.5G network coverage, allowing hands-on interaction with the latest technologies both indoors and outdoors.
