Former Coalition head Rod Fergusson had a specific direction in mind for Gears of War 6’s story before he left in 2020.
One of last summer’s biggest surprises was the announcement of Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel that won’t replace Gears of War 6, but rather explore the origins of Marcus Fenix and Kait Diaz. Although few details are known about the sixth installment, it’s now clear that the original concept was to launch the heroes into space, reminiscent of Call of Duty’s shift a decade ago.
Rod Fergusson, now leading the Diablo series at Blizzard, revealed that one of the initial plans for Gears 6 involved taking Marcus Fenix and Kait Diaz beyond Sera’s atmosphere. This idea was put forward shortly after Gears 5’s release in 2019, just before Fergusson’s departure.
While it’s unclear if a full storyline was ever fleshed out, the concept involved using Union of Independent Republics technology to escape the devastation of Sera, with the characters fighting for survival in a desperate search for a new home. Fergusson shared with IGN that the space setting in Gears 6 would not have been an epic journey, but rather a tense survival story.
Although this storyline will never materialize, The Coalition reassured fans that Kait’s story is not over, and the team remains committed to continuing it in the future. For now, they are focused on developing Gears of War: E-Day, which will offer fans a deeper look into the saga’s origins without neglecting the central stories of Kait Diaz, JD Fenix, Delmont Walker, and Marcus Fenix.
