A Newly Released Alarm Clock Didn’t Escape DOOM Either! [VIDEO]

Id Software’s evergreen classic (which, not coincidentally, has a new version with cross-platform mod support) has become a serious meme for what avid fans run it on, and now we can add another device to that list.

Eurogamer has reported that Nintendo hardware obsessive GaryOderNichts has done what was only a matter of time before it happened: he’s made DOOM run on his recently released alarm clock, the Alarm! So the big N didn’t get away with DOOM, and to be honest, this “port” is better than the SNES version released back in the day…

It all started when GaryOderNichts figured out how to run custom code on the Nintendo Alarmo. He detailed the process on his blog, and the first result was a cat on the screen that had little to do with the Japanese company’s IP… but that was the start of an avalanche: many people asked for Doomguy to run on the fresh N hardware, and it didn’t take him long to get it running on the not-quite-gaming device on November 2nd, and that had its pitfalls. The little “bell” is used to rotate, pressing it advances the game, and the two side buttons are used to fire.

“There is currently no audio support. To get around the USB loader’s memory size limitations, the .wad must be compressed and then decompressed to external memory at boot time. However, it is possible to load the shareware version of Doom entirely from USB without modifying the Alarmo,” GaryOderNichts wrote in the description of a video demonstration of the hack. He’s right: the shareware version is smaller, because such versions (which were common back then) usually don’t include the full game, just a trial version that can be freely distributed.

We wonder what comes next? The code is available on Github.
