“We thought it would take you longer to get it.” It took days and a lot of brainpower, but one player has finally discovered the hidden secret of Silent Hill 2 Remake. A hidden message in 26 images throughout the game, and its discovery has been applauded by Bloober Team.
It’s been a month since Silent Hill 2 Remake was released, and while the “remake” tag clearly states this is a reimagining of the millennium’s classic, Bloober Team, the new developers, have added some original content of their own. One such addition includes “strange” photos scattered throughout the game as collectibles, which actually conceal a hidden message that has now been revealed.
Spoiler warning: This article may contain mentions of Silent Hill 2 Remake’s story and the original game.
Ever since Bloober Team announced they were developing a remake of the classic psychological horror game, fans of the original have been skeptical about whether the studio could live up to the legacy of the original. However, with the remake’s release, the community has been pleasantly surprised. The game not only preserves the horror and suspenseful atmosphere that defined the original, but also introduces significant graphical and gameplay improvements. Yet, the purpose of the mysterious collectible photos had left many players puzzled – until now.
The discovery was made by Reddit user DaleRobinson, who uncovered a hidden code in these images. While exploring the city’s various scenes, players can find a total of 26 photos, each with a unique caption and coded message. DaleRobinson figured out that by identifying patterns in recurring objects in the photos and using them to decipher letters in the captions, the phrase “you’ve been here for two decades” was revealed, a message that has had a significant impact on the community.
A hidden message celebrated by its creators
The revelation of the hidden message has sparked various theories among players. Some see it as a reference to the fact that the main character, James Sunderland, first visited Silent Hill with his wife in 1981, with the original game launching 20 years later in 2001. Others interpret it as symbolizing James’s eternal torment in a purgatory-like state, while some believe it’s a way of breaking the fourth wall and acknowledging the fans’ loyalty to the franchise for over two decades.
Regardless of the interpretation, it didn’t take long for Bloober Team to confirm the message’s authenticity, though not its meaning. Mateusz Lenart, creative director and lead game designer at Bloober Team, took to Twitter to celebrate DaleRobinson’s discovery, stating, “We knew it wouldn’t be hidden for long,” although he hinted at a “fear” within the studio that they might have been overly complex in embedding these messages. “I really wanted to keep it subtle when I was painting those pictures. Congrats!” Lenart concluded.
