This episode is likely to be the most successful launch of the franchise so far, as some very strong statistics have been released…
Last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III was beaten almost instantly by Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, leaving Activision and Microsoft to break out the champagne. This has already been highlighted by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who said in the company’s quarterly financial report that it set new records for the franchise and was the biggest launch ever for Call of Duty.
According to Circana (formerly NPD Group) CEO and analyst Mat Piscatella, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has captured the attention of essentially one in two US Xbox Series players, a huge achievement, although the fact that this year’s CoD was on Xbox Game Pass from launch (which, of course, requires the more expensive Ultimate subscription) has a big part to play in that.
“According to Circana’s Player Engagement Tracker, on October 23, 19% of US active Xbox Series players and 18% of US active PlayStation 5 players launched Call of Duty HQ. On October 28th, 52% of active Xbox Series gamers and 34% of active PlayStation 5 gamers did so. Both were all-time highs for Call of Duty HQ,” Piscatella wrote.
The PlayStation 5 was not far behind, and considering that the US certainly sold more PS5s than the Xbox Series, the 34% figure is not an unworthy result, as they had no “loophole” thanks to Xbox Game Pass. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was also the biggest seller in the UK, although we have not heard more specific statistics yet.
So far, Call of Duty has benefited from Microsoft’s entry, as they now officially own the Activision Blizzard King, so the launch on Game Pass was easily arranged.
