Despite Nintendo’s secrecy about the platform that will follow the Switch (and which has yet to be officially christened), the leaks are getting unstoppable…
Watertoon wrote about what they found during their Nintendo Switch Online playtest on Bluesky. This took place over the past few days and involved an otherwise unannounced title. The project supports mesh shaders and is capable of 4K resolution. The Switch and its yet to be officially named successor will be connected via Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Account, and the code suggests that the platform that will follow the Switch’s slowing sales (which we reported on yesterday) will support this resolution. Only when docked, of course: in handheld mode, there’s no way we’ll get a screen with a resolution higher than 1080p!
It was also reported yesterday that the Nintendo Switch 2 will retroactively support the Switch game catalog. This is understandable, as it would be a huge mistake for the Japanese company if the more than 1 billion Switch games sold were unusable on the new hardware! (That’s an official Nintendo sales figure!) So, just like PlayStation 5 did with PlayStation 4 and the Xbox Series did with Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2 (we don’t know what it’s called yet) will support the previous generation’s game catalog.
We still have to wait for an official announcement of Nintendo Switch 2. The Japanese company is sure to do so by the end of March, but its release is likely to be later, in April 2025 at the earliest. Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology will also be supported by the platform, which will presumably use Nvidia’s Tegra T239 chip.
Hopefully, the hardware that comes after the Switch will not be sold at a gold price, but we can only speculate about that as well. None of this is official yet!
