TECH NEWS – ChatGPT’s training may have been infringed by Sam Altman’s company, and OpenAI is now winning.
We recently wrote about the company that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could be a reality within five years, but in the meantime OpenAI is in a bit of a legal bind because it trained ChatGPT and large language models (LLMs) on articles obtained from major news agencies without consent. But there is nothing to fear now, because a US federal judge, Colleen McMahon in New York, has dismissed a lawsuit against OpenAI!
Raw Story and AlterNet both accused the company of using articles from them to train OpenAI’s LLMs and violating copyright law, but Reuters reported that the lawsuit was dismissed on Thursday because they failed to provide adequate and/or sufficient evidence to support their case. McMahon said OpenAI had caused no tangible harm, but allowed Raw Story and AlterNet to refile the lawsuit, but she was skeptical…
According to an OpenAI spokesperson, they were following a legitimate practice of using publicly available data and widely accepted legal precedents to support AI modeling practices. This is not the first time a lawsuit has been filed against the company, as the New York Times was the first media outlet to file a lawsuit against OpenAI in December. We are seeing more and more lawsuits against not only OpenAI, but also other major tech companies for using content from artists, YouTubers, and publishers to train AI models without their consent. As AI advances, we are seeing huge improvements in the way we interact and get information, but the advances in technology have also created complications.
So OpenAI may find itself in court again, as Raw Story and AlterNet may try with another lawsuit…
