Xbox head Phil Spencer has confirmed that a handheld Xbox console is in development, but it’s still in its experimental phase. This long-awaited device won’t be hitting shelves anytime soon, as the team is exploring various prototypes to find the ideal design.
After weeks of speculation, it’s finally official: Xbox is developing a handheld console. Although we don’t yet know its technical specs, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s gaming division, has shared that teams are actively experimenting with prototypes. While details remain scarce, it’s now clear that this device is indeed on its way, though it will likely be a few years before it’s ready for the market.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Spencer revealed Microsoft’s vision for the handheld console, acknowledging that the team is working on prototypes and exploring different design possibilities. Spencer has asked his team to analyze the current market trends to create a device that meets evolving gaming needs. The development is still in the early stages, and Spencer suggests that we won’t see it on shelves for several more years.
“Long term, I love that we’re building devices,” Spencer told Bloomberg. “And I think our team can do some really innovative work, but we want to be informed by learnings and what’s happening now.” It’s worth noting that the handheld console market has recently been booming with devices like the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go, capturing the attention of many gamers.
In the meantime, Xbox’s current goal is to improve its app on existing devices. According to Spencer, this also involves partnering with hardware manufacturers to ensure compatibility with Xbox games and experiences. Xbox remains focused on making its services accessible across all types of platforms.
Spencer: “There’s No Red Line” for Bringing Xbox Games to PS5
During the interview, Spencer also addressed Xbox’s plan to bring some exclusive titles to the PS5 ecosystem. Hi-Fi RUSH, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded have already launched on Sony’s console, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which is set to release on December 9 for PC and Xbox Series, is expected on PS5 in spring 2025. According to Spencer, there is “no red line” regarding which Xbox games might be released on the PS5.
