Is the Film Industry in Trouble?! Nicole Kidman Throws Shade on Deadpool

MOVIE NEWS – Nicole Kidman, a veteran of the industry, also poked Deadpool while criticizing the state of the film industry…

Nicole Kidman, a widely respected Hollywood veteran who is no stranger to the ups and downs of the entertainment industry, never hesitates to criticize the industry when she feels the need. In a recent interview, the award-winning actress noted the drastic decline in new TV series and movies, saying it’s harder than ever to greenlight projects that aren’t guaranteed to be instant hits — like a certain “Marvel Jesus.”

Speaking to Vanity Fair about her upcoming erotic drama Babygirl, Kidman reflected on the difficulty of landing new roles in an age when fewer and fewer directors are willing to take creative risks. “Everything’s hard now,” she stated. “Actually everything. I mean, maybe not Deadpool, but there’s nothing that’s, ‘Oh my gosh. Yup. This is it. Greenlight, let’s go.’ Or maybe it’s just the things that I do. I just think that’s the nature of what we’re dealing with now. Things are shrinking in terms of shows being done and films being made.” Kidman added that her extensive experience in Hollywood has made her somewhat desensitized to the upheavals and obstacles. However, she also admitted that the “shrinking” of the industry is still an unsettling prospect.

“I mean, I started at 14, so I’ve seen a lot now.”

Kidman’s subtle jabs at Deadpool and other crowd-pleasing projects may seem tasteless given the number of box office records set by Deadpool & Wolverine alone – but in an industry quickly saturated with sequels and spinoffs, it’s certainly disheartening to see the decline of more creative ventures, regardless of the success of the MCU. Incidentally, Kidman is far from the first celebrity to criticize the dominance of Marvel blockbusters. Prominent figures such as Martin Scorsese and James Cameron have argued that Marvel’s larger-than-life presence in Hollywood is preventing independent films from taking off. However, it is difficult to say for sure whether these big studios can really do anything about the lack of new and original content.

Nicole Kidman is one of the biggest critics of the film industry

After more than four decades in the entertainment industry, Kidman is clearly not one to be critical – not even of other seasoned Hollywood veterans. Just a few days ago, Kidman stated that she would like to work with renowned director Martin Scorsese “if he does a film with a woman,” referring to Scorsese’s male-dominated projects and the author’s comment in 2019 that he no longer has time for women.

In another interview for her upcoming film Babygirl, an erotic and highly R-rated thriller, Kidman candidly revealed the feelings of exploitation she and other Hollywood actresses have experienced when filming sex scenes for male directors. While her penchant for outspokenness may not sit well with all fans, Kidman has plenty of experience to back up her criticisms, making her a reliable source when it comes to insider information.

Despite the perceived decline of the entertainment industry, Kidman is a pretty busy actress these days. Her next screen appearance, Halina Reijn’s aforementioned Babygirl, will arrive around Christmas. He will star in it with Harris Dickinson. They are also expected to star alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in the two-season Prime Video adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta novels – although the highly-anticipated series has yet to begin filming.
