PlayStation 5 Pro: Efficient Power Use Surprises Gamers! [VIDEO]

Although we’ve reported that Sony has bundled a larger power supply with the more powerful PlayStation 5, there’s no significant change in power consumption.

Digital Foundry tested the power consumption of the base PlayStation 5, the revamped model, and the PlayStation 5 Pro. Several games were included in the test, including Elden Ring, which FromSoftware did not update with PlayStation 5 Pro support, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which it did. For both titles, the PlayStation 5 Pro used the same amount of power in quality mode as the redesigned model (you can’t really call it slim), while performance and image quality were much better, although the redesigned PlayStation 5 may have had some issues with higher-than-expected power consumption.

Compared to the base PlayStation 5, however, the new console’s efficiency is good, with the PlayStation 5 Pro using the same amount of power for both patched and unpatched games. This could also indicate that a more modern manufacturing process has been used for the half-generation update, so its SoC (system-on-a-chip) is likely manufactured on a 4-nanometer node. This means less heat generation and better efficiency (higher performance with lower power consumption).

That said, the PlayStation 5 Pro is still the best way to play PS5 titles to date. Two excellent examples of this are God of War: Ragnarök and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, both of which have huge advantages. We also recently reported that we’re now seeing a game on the platform running at 8K resolution with decent performance using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling.

The PlayStation 5 Pro won’t be on sale this holiday season (as we mentioned in yesterday’s news), but that’s no surprise as the console hasn’t even been out for two weeks.
