Back 4 Blood 2: Continuing the Left 4 Dead Legacy?

Turtle Rock Studios is apparently developing the second part of Back 4 Blood, and it’s worth summarizing what the signs point to…

Back 4 Blood was released in 2021 and was developed as a spiritual sequel to Left 4 Dead at Turtle Rock Studios. Some of the original developers worked on this project, which didn’t receive overwhelmingly positive reviews, but still managed to reach over 6 million players in its first month of release. In early 2023, however, the studio announced that it would cease development on Back 4 Blood in order to focus its resources on its next project.

Even then, there was speculation about what Turtle Rock Studios might be working on, but the simplest and most logical answer was that they were diverting resources to Back 4 Blood 2. This was supported by the studio’s job postings, but now MP1st has come up with something new. It all has to do with Jesse Hutch’s resume. Hutch is an actor and stuntman whose movements were digitized (mocap = motion capture) in the first episode. He also worked on Dead By Daylight and Gears of War 4…

…and then under Turtle Rock Studios he listed Gobi 2. The number two alone suggests that this could be the codename for the sequel to Back 4 Blood. We should add that the studio registered the domain back4blood2.com last May, which is still active today. By the way, Gobi is the name of the studio’s mascot character: a bearded dragon who died in 2018. Gobi also appeared in the studio’s 2015 game Evolve. A sequel to Evolve alone doesn’t seem like a good idea, given the reviews and sales of the first installment at the time. Evolve was also codenamed Goliath before its official release.

This is not official yet, but an announcement will probably be made soon. Perhaps an announcement will be made at The Game Awards.
