TECH NEWS – The ‘reds’ are opening up to smartphones, but don’t expect Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy to suddenly have a rival…
AMD is already in talks to bring its Ryzen AI portable system-on-a-chip (SoC) hardware to mobile phones. Rumors about this have been circulating lately, and they come from Smartphone Magazine. According to them, AMD wants to enter the mobile market with its APU-based Ryzen AI SoCs to compete with Qualcomm and MediaTek. Interestingly, Qualcomm and MediaTek are also trying to gain a foothold in PCs.
If AMD really gets into mobile, it could disrupt the market monopolized by Apple and MediaTek. Meanwhile, Nvidia and MediaTek are rumored to be working on an AI PC chip, so the mobile and PC industries are starting to merge. And that’s why it might be a good time for AMD to enter the market, although there are still some questions the company might have to answer…
AMD’s technology was recently partially implemented by Samsung in the Exynos chip. These SoCs power Samsung’s latest Galaxy smartphones and tablets, and include AMD’s RDNA ray tracing capabilities and even elements of FSR upscaling technology. Only this time, AMD wouldn’t be using RDNA IP, but instead could be specifically sub-branding Ryzen as it expands into the mobile market.
Meanwhile, Nvidia is essentially trying to corner the AI market, and AMD has no room to grow. For this reason, it may be logical to open up to the mobile market. So far, it has been very rare for a PC company to open up to mobile. So it will be interesting to see how much success AMD can have if it does enter the mobile market.
Hopefully there will be some concrete results as this could be a game changer for AMD.
