Playground Games’ reboot, which has been in development for years, is reportedly in very good shape and will even have CD Projekt RED’s style back.
After Lionhead was shut down by Microsoft in 2016 (and with it, Fabe Legends), they had to look for a new studio to handle the IP. That turned out to be Playground Games, the development team behind Forza Horizon. Jez Corden, editor of Windows Central, spoke on the Xbox Two podcast about seeing the Fable reboot in action, and he thinks the result is fantastic. And the combat is similar to The Witcher because Playground hired some ex-CDPR developers…
“I recently saw some alpha gameplay footage of Fable. I have no idea when it was, I don’t know if it was earlier in development or more recently, but it looked fantastic. You can tell that this game has CDPR DNA. They brought in a bunch of developers, I think they brought in the combat designer and you can kind of tell. I’m not saying it’s 100% one-to-one with The Witcher because it’s not, but you can kind of tell with the melee combat, the pirouetting, the dodging, the seamless hacking and slashing into an execution that looks really cool. All that stuff is there; it looks super polished, super good. If that was early gameplay, it probably looks even better now.
There was also a lot of mixing and matching of different types of weapons. There was pulling out a bow and arrow and also casting spells, I saw a spell that lifted a bunch of guys off the ground and knocked them down. I also saw some enemies, like a giant chicken. It actually just looked like a chicken with that kind of comedic angle, but not. It looked like a dangerous, scary chicken. I also saw werewolves. There was a scene where they lured a werewolf out of its lair with bacon and eggs and sausages. It looked really great. The fighting looked really close. I saw a lot of different weapons. I saw a big hammer thing that you could swing around and hit multiple enemies at once. My hype level went up a lot when I saw that stuff, so that’s why I’m so bullish on Fable now,” Corden said.
The Witcher 3’s combat was a bit weak, but Playground Games may have taken the concept and improved upon it. Maybe we’ll see a Fable reboot at The Game Awards, with the ability to create both male and female characters. The game could be coming to Xbox Series and PC in late 2025.
