Remedy Surprises Fans with Genre Shift in Control 2!

The Finnish studio also announced sales figures for its two latest games, so let’s see what’s going on at Remedy…

Control 2 will obviously be a sequel to Control, but during the Capital Markets Day 2024 presentation Remedy Entertainment confirmed that the game, which will be available for consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series?) and PC, will be an action-RPG! The Finns expect the game to eventually sell between 3-4 million copies. That’s not much, but it’s a realistic result for Remedy, even though the budget will be higher than the first part, at €50 million.

The first part of the action-adventure genre Control, which was released on August 27, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (Epic Games Store; it also appeared on Steam exactly a year later), then on August 30, 2020 for Nintendo Switch (from the cloud) and Amazon Luna, on February 2, 2021 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, and on July 27, 2021 for the now defunct Google Store, is already at more than 4.5 million sales, according to Remedy. The game has been played by 19 million people so far. So they have lower expectations for the second installment than the first, which was released in just over 5 years. It had a budget of €30 million.

Finally, Remedy Entertainment presented the results of its latest game. Alan Wake II, which has been out for more than a year (it launched on October 27, 2023 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC on the Epic Games Store), is at 1.8 million sales. About 40% of the players have played through the story, and it is unlikely that it will continue to generate a profit for the Finns, as the publisher Epic Games Publishing will not pay royalties to the studio until they are reimbursed for the game.

FBC Firebreak, Remedy’s multiplayer cooperative spin-off, has a budget of €30 million and, despite the lower price, needs 3 million sales to recoup its costs.
