What?! A Free Gran Turismo 7?! Here’s PlayStation’s 30th Birthday Surprise!

One of PlayStation’s surprises for its 30th birthday has been revealed: My First Gran Turismo, a free version of Gran Turismo 7, offering a scaled-down introduction to the beloved racing series.

PlayStation is on the cusp of its 30th anniversary. The Japanese gaming giant has firmly established itself as a leader in the entertainment industry, and while December will focus on The Game Awards 2024, Sony has kept some announcements for itself. Alongside a possible God of War reveal hinted at by Christopher Judge, Sony has registered My First Gran Turismo, which appears to be a free-to-play version of Gran Turismo 7.

According to registration details filed with Taiwanese authorities, My First Gran Turismo is designed as an introduction to the world of Polyphony Digital’s acclaimed racing simulator. While specific details are limited, this free version will reportedly feature a curated selection of cars, tracks, and events, aiming to evoke the nostalgia of the franchise’s early days. The game is expected to launch for both PS4 and PS5 during the holiday season, although Sony has not confirmed an official release date yet.

Though the concept is reminiscent of 2017’s Gran Turismo Sport, a more streamlined project compared to its predecessor and successor, My First Gran Turismo seeks to attract new players, particularly those hesitant to purchase Gran Turismo 7. It remains to be seen whether the development team will repurpose assets like cars and tracks from the main game or create entirely new content for this pared-down experience.

Celebrating 30 Years of PlayStation

The festivities for PlayStation’s 30th anniversary began in September with the launch of Astro Bot, a game packed with tributes to Sony’s most iconic console titles. Celebrations have also included the release of digital soundtracks for beloved franchises like God of War and Twisted Metal on Spotify, with more releases planned through January 2025.

Sony also posted a teaser video titled Play Has No Limits on YouTube, though it was quickly taken down. The video seemed to hint at a new PlayStation event potentially scheduled for December 3, 2024, but this has not been officially confirmed.
