The Witcher 4: Full Development Now Underway!

CD Projekt RED (CDPR) has also revealed where Cyberpunk 2077 stands in terms of sales (taking into account the single role of Phantom Liberty released alongside it).

Sebastian Kalemba, vice president of CDPR and director of Project Polaris (that’s the codename for the new trilogy), confirmed on Twitter (with a picture, presumably the first screenshot of the game) that they have gone into full development as promised, so The Witcher 4 is already in full swing: “I’m thrilled to announce that Project Polaris has entered full production! With new challenges just around the corner, it’s the talented and hardworking people who make me believe that together we can make the upcoming Witcher saga a remarkable experience. No stopping now! Stay tuned for what’s on the other side of the coin!”

We first heard about this game two and a half years ago. That’s when CDPR said that they were going to drop REDengine and use Unreal Engine 5. Paweł Zawodny, the company’s technical director, said at the time: “From the beginning, we did not consider a typical licensing agreement; both we and Epic see this as a long-term, fulfilling technical partnership. It is important for CD Projekt Red to have the technical direction of our next game set at the earliest possible stage, as in the past we have spent a lot of resources and energy developing and customizing REDengine with each successive game release. This relationship is so exciting because it will increase development predictability and efficiency while giving us access to the most advanced game development tools. I can’t wait to see the great games we’ll create with Unreal Engine 5!”

In the meantime, let’s talk about Cyberpunk 2077, which was released almost four years ago and has been in a very… interesting state. Despite a rocky start, there have been no complaints about the game’s sales, and now CDPR has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty have sold a combined 38 million copies. Of those, 30 million are for the base game and another eight million for the add-on.

That’s still a long way from the 50 million for The Witcher 3!
