CINEMA NEWS – Nicole Kidman, who plays a middle-aged boss, experiences her midlife crisis in a romance with her young intern. But who is playing whom? Babygirl will be in cinemas from early 2025, distributed by ADS Service.
Halina Reijn, the director of the black comedy Let’s Play Murderer! (Bodies Bodies Bodies), returns with an erotic thriller, inspired by films such as Unfair Offer and Basic Instinct. Babygirl had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, and critics unanimously praised Nicole Kidman’s performance, calling it her bravest and best performance in recent times.
Romy (Nicole Kidman), a powerful CEO, risks her career and marriage when she begins a passionate affair with her much younger intern, Samuel (Harris Dickinson). Their erotic, bizarre romance takes increasingly bizarre turns, and she becomes uncertain about who is really in control in their subordinate-superior relationship.
“We are all full of forbidden fantasies that we may never share with anyone,” said the director, who also worked as an actor. “I am fascinated by the duality of human nature, and this film is an attempt to shed light on the opposing forces that make up our personalities without judgment. For me, feminism means the freedom to explore a woman’s vulnerability, love, shame, anger and the beast within her.”
According to Reijn, aging means facing the infinite in all its immensity. “As middle-aged people, we cannot hide, we have to face our inner demons. The more we suppress them, the more dangerous and confused our behavior can become.” The director adds that “the relationship at the heart of Jókislány allows Romy and Samuel to play with the chaos surrounding power, gender, age, hierarchy and primal instincts.” Reijn believes that despite its forbidden nature, the joy of discovery can be liberating and even healing.
Jókislány is expected to be released in Hungarian cinemas in early 2025, distributed by ADS Service.
