Grinding Gear Games was expecting a lot of interest, but maybe not that much… so the game launched a little later.
Originally, Path of Exile 2’s Early Access period was supposed to start yesterday, but the studio was still working on the databases at the last minute, as a lot of players were queuing up to try the game. So many, in fact, that the studio was not expecting it at all. Originally, this database work was supposed to take half an hour, but it didn’t take that long… it took more time!
While the database was being fixed, another bug was found in the game. A crash was discovered that would have affected many users, and the developers said the game was ready for release, but then they found another bug in the configuration that required the realm to be restarted. This has been mentioned by Grinding Gear Games all the time on social media, so it’s worth checking their Twitter for example to see what’s going on.
The latest bug is that people who bought the game on Steam can’t log in, and they will find a way to do that. What can be said about Grinding Gear Games is that they are persistent in fixing the many bugs that were expected. But there was a problem where multiple characters had the same character ID, and when that happens you have to restart the game world every time, and they wipe the database so it doesn’t corrupt data.
We’ve run into the same symptom again with a different problem. We are working on fixing it again but regrettably every time this happens we have to restart and wipe the databases to prevent them getting into bad or corrupted states. We’ll have a fix out as soon as we can! Thank…

Despite this, Path of Exile 2 is already more popular on Twitch than World of Warcraft or New World, and is ahead of Diablo IV in the ratings. The game isn’t completely unplayable, but it’s still a coughing game.
So it might be worth waiting a while for things to settle down, but it does show that if a game needs servers, there’s a good chance they’ll be down at launch.
