MOVIE NEWS – Alien: Romulus is the first Alien film to receive a Golden Globe nomination in almost forty years…
Horror films are set to shine at the Golden Globes this year, as Alien: Romulus has officially been nominated in the Cinematic Box Office Achievement category! The sci-fi horror film isn’t the only one in the genre to receive recognition, as The Substance also received five Golden Globe nominations, reflecting a growing shift in the genre’s perception and well-deserved recognition. The nominations for both films speak to the genre’s impact on the industry this year, and The Substance shows that horror has the potential to be among the other films competing for the prestigious award. In contrast, Alien: Romulus’ nomination demonstrates the film’s broad appeal and success. What’s more, it’s a nod to the entire franchise, as no Alien movie has been nominated for a Golden Globe in nearly 40 years.
The Golden Globes require a film to gross at least $150 million worldwide in the year of the nomination in the category of Cinematic Box Office Achievement, with $100 million of that coming from domestic box office receipts.
Here is the full list of nominees for the Cinematic Box Office Achievement Category:
- Alien: Romulus
- Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
- Deadpool & Wolverine
- Gladiator II
- Inside Out 2
- Twisters
- Wicked
- The Wild Robot
This category was introduced at last year’s Golden Globes, which featured such monumental works as Oppenheimer and Barbie. The latter was the first film to win in this category.
The nomination further cements the newfound importance of Romulus and the Alien franchise
The nomination for Alien: Romulus ends a nearly 40-year slump for the franchise. No film in the Alien anthology series has received a Golden Globe nomination since Sigourney Weaver won Best Actress for her performance in James Cameron’s Aliens in 1986. The first Alien sequel, Aliens, was a monumental box office success that is still considered not only one of the best sequels ever made, but one of the best films in the entire franchise. The fact that Alien: Romulus is the next film in the series to receive a Golden Globe nod is not only a testament to the impact of director Fede Álvarez’s exceptional film but also to the franchise’s renewed relevance.
Romulus has captured the attention of both old and new Alien fans alike, thanks to its similar interweaving of old and new concepts.
It combines the best of the previous films in the series with new and unique ideas introduced by Ridley Scott in the recent prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, resulting in an unforgettable experience. The box office success and positive reviews speak for themselves, and with a potential sequel in the works for Álvarez, the nomination brings newfound attention to the film.
In addition to the currently in-production Alien: Romulus sequel, fans can also look forward to Noah Hawley’s upcoming FX series Alien: Earth, which takes place two years before Ridley Scott’s original film. While it’s long overdue, it’s refreshing to see a horror film like Alien: Romulus receive recognition, especially since it was originally a streaming-exclusive release, which would have prevented it from being nominated in this category…
