Jeff Bridges’ The Old Man Canceled After Just Two Seasons

MOVIE NEWS – FX has canceled The Old Man, starring Jeff Bridges. Based on Thomas Perry’s bestselling novel, the series was developed by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine. After premiering in 2022 and returning for its second season in 2024, The Old Man has officially come to an end. According to Deadline, delays in production significantly dampened audience interest, ultimately leading to the series’ cancellation.

The thriller starred Jeff Bridges as Dan Chase, a former CIA operative who is drawn back into action after being hunted by his own agency. John Lithgow co-starred as Harold Harper, a former FBI Assistant Director with a long and complicated history with Chase, while Alia Shawkat played Angela Adams, Harper’s apprentice and, as the story unfolds, Chase’s estranged daughter.

Production challenges plagued The Old Man from the start. Filming for the first season was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, only to be delayed again when Bridges was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. While undergoing treatment, he contracted Covid-19. Filming eventually resumed and wrapped after Bridges entered remission, but delays struck again during the 2023 Hollywood strikes, affecting production on Season 2.

Though Season 2 premiered in September 2024, it failed to match the critical success of its predecessor. Critics labeled it tedious and disjointed, with its Rotten Tomatoes score falling from 97% in Season 1 to 64% in Season 2. When it debuted, The Old Man became FX’s most-watched Hulu premiere, earning critical acclaim and securing Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for its stars.

What Would Season 3 Have Explored?

Shortly after the second season ended, Bridges and Steinberg spoke to The Wrap about their plans for Season 3. Bridges expressed enthusiasm about continuing the story, having signed on for three seasons. Steinberg hinted that the third season would focus on Chase’s relationship with Angela:

“As much as the story has covered, the relationship between Jeff and Alia’s characters is just beginning. Season 3 would have explored how they deal with each other without barriers like phones,” Steinberg explained.

While fans may not see Chase’s next chapter, Bridges remains busy with upcoming projects such as Tron: Ares, The Carnival at the End of Days with Johnny Depp and Adam Driver, and Grendel, where he voices the titular character.
