MOVIE NEWS – Arnold Schwarzenegger’s biggest regret as a filmmaker is that he turned down one of the most successful action films of the 90s, Michael Bay’s The Rock. The half-finished script didn’t convince the actor, so the role went to Nicolas Cage, who gave his career a huge boost.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has become a legend of explosive action films in recent decades. During the 80s and 90s, he has such iconic productions as Commando, but his filmography could have been enriched even further by another big success. However, such an opportunity slipped away when Nicolas Cage passed on the lead role in Michael Bay’s The Rock.
“My Biggest Regret”
“This is the movie I regret most not making,” the actor said in a Reddit post and in various interviews a few years ago. Schwarzenegger had the script, but it was so rudimentary and immature that he didn’t want to commit to the project, opening the way for Nicolas Cage.
“I really regret not doing The Rock. I love the movie. When it was offered to me, it was just an 80-page script, full of scribbles and handwritten notes, and it didn’t feel finished,” Schwarzenegger recalled on Reddit and in The Sun. “They were saying things like, ‘This is crap,’ ‘Let’s not do this,’ ‘Let’s rewrite this.’ I was working on another movie and I just didn’t know what to do with it. I decided to wait until they fixed the bugs, but by the time they did, Nicolas Cage had already been signed.”
The actor spoke highly of Nicolas Cage’s performance: “I’m a huge fan of the way the movie ended up, and I’m not sure I would have done as good a job as Nicolas Cage, but I was really mad at myself for turning it down.”
Schwarzenegger starred in The Expendables in 1996, which many consider to be the end of his golden age in action movies. Meanwhile, The Rock was a huge box office hit, grossing $335.6 million.
What is The Rock about and where can I watch it?
The Rock is a thrilling, action-packed film in which the former Alcatraz prison is taken over by a high-ranking military commander (Ed Harris) who threatens the people of San Francisco with missiles containing deadly gases. The government sends a chemical weapons expert (Nicolas Cage) on a near-suicide mission, joined by a single ally: a man (Sean Connery) who escaped from prison more than 20 years ago. The film is directed by Michael Bay (Transformers) and is available on Disney+.
