Assassin’s Creed: Ezio’s Surprising Comeback!

Ezio Auditore de Firenze is considered the most popular Assassin in the franchise’s more than decade and a half history, and now he’s back!

First seen in Assassin’s Creed II, Ezio was last seen in 2011’s Assassin’s Creed Revelations. Ubisoft has since focused on other Assassins (one of which was in the news yesterday), but that hasn’t stopped fans from seeing the French publisher’s character in other games, including Fortnite and Fall Guys. Now, Ezio is about to make an appearance in another franchise!

Ubisoft recently announced that this game will soon be over, but that isn’t stopping the Yves Guillemot-led company (and soon to be possibly owned by Tencent) from bringing Ezio to XDefiant. The Assassin’s Creed-themed update to the free-to-play first-person shooter, due out in June, will be a bit bittersweet for fans. The game has been unable to maintain the player numbers that are essential for live service titles, and this is doubly true for games using the free-to-play model: if there is no audience to sustain the game, the losses will eventually not be absorbed by the publisher.

“So here it is! Our final content patch for XDefiant. It’s obviously a bittersweet moment, but I just want to say how proud I am of everyone on this team who has done everything they could to make this game and all of its amazing content. We are adding 3 new factions in this patch, with the Assassins of course, which were planned for Season 3, but also the Wolves and Omega Force from Seasons 4 and 5 respectively,” Ubisoft’s announcement reads.

The soundtrack for Assassin’s Creed II was composed by Jesper Kyd and has become one of the most popular works in the gaming industry. Since it will appear in a slightly reworked form in XDefiant, the announcement has been well received by the public. It’s a shame that the new content will only appear in this form (too late)…
