Since Steam is still the most popular PC platform (with GOG and the Epic Games Store far behind), if something is selling well on Steam, it’s a pretty good game.
Of course, Steam didn’t share the business details, so we don’t know which titles generated how much revenue, but it’s clear that Valve divided the bestsellers into five categories. If a title was in the top twelve, it was rated platinum. If a game was between 13th and 24th, it was gold. Between 25th and 50th place is a silver plaque, and in the second half of the list (between 51st and 100th), games receive a bronze rating.
There are also subcategories: bestselling, newest, most played, Steam Deck or controller supported, or VR enabled. For these, Valve has taken into account the most concurrent players and the most money generated. Of course, the platinum titles are led by games that use the live service model, such as Apex Legends and Counter-Strike 2, as well as PUBG Battlegrounds and Destiny 2. Paid games, not surprisingly, include Black Mythos: Wukong, Baldur’s Gate 3, which launched last year but has an even larger player base this year, and Elden Ring (which received the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC this year).
Among this year’s releases, Path of Exile II, Helldivers 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Black Mythos: Wukong are all in the platinum category. Valve looks at how much money a title makes in the first two weeks after release. In terms of concurrent players, it’s the live service titles that have been running for a while. In the Platinum category, there are over 450,000 players (e.g. Apex Legends, Counter-Strike 2, and the recently released Marvel Rivals), but there are also paid titles (Helldivers 2, Black Myth: Wukong, Elden Ring).
Congratulations to the winners.
