MOVIE NEWS – Sonic the Hedgehog 3 overtakes Mufasa: The Lion King to claim the top spot in North American theaters. Paramount’s latest Sonic film dominates the box office rankings.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 made a high-speed debut at the North American box office, outpacing its competitor, Mufasa: The Lion King.
The Sonic sequel raked in $60.1 million during its opening weekend, with an additional $9 million on Monday. Analysts predict it will generate another $50 million from December 25 to 29.
In contrast, Mufasa earned $35.4 million over its debut weekend, followed by $7 million on Monday. The film is projected to pull in $45 million during the five-day Christmas stretch, according to Deadline.
“As we’ve watched this franchise’s audience grow, we identified a December window where we believed we could stand out in the market,” said Chris Aronson, Paramount’s president of domestic distribution. “We’ve achieved that. Sonic is poised to dominate the holiday season.”
Reportedly, Paramount greenlit a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog film even before Sonic 3 hit theaters last weekend.
Though plot details remain under wraps, Sonic 4 is reportedly in the planning phase and expected to release in spring 2027. Sega president Shuji Utsumi mentioned earlier this month that the company is considering launching its own game subscription service. He also stated that Sega has no current plans for additional mini consoles.
