MOVIE NEWS – According to the year-end data of the Hungarian Film Database, The Minds of the Dead 2 was the favorite of Hungarians in 2024. Second on the list is Gábor Herendi’s romantic comedy, I Went Running and the animation Wild Robot is in first place, followed by Moana 2. Dune: Part 2 finished in fifth place. The dominance of franchises and sequels is still typical and family animations are popular. The TOP 10 is diverse in terms of genres and Hungarian viewers went to the cinema this year not only for the “big bangs”: they also appreciate the quality and depth of content. It is good news that two Hungarian films are on the list.
The TOP 10 list compiled by www.mafab.hu was based on the film’s revenue – the lower limit was 150 million forints -, very heavily weighted with the likeability index. This was necessary because there were quite large differences between the revenue of individual films.
The Hungarians’ favorite in 2024 was The Walking Dead 2, with a revenue of 1.4 billion forints, with an 85% rating. In the new film by Disney and Pixar, we return to Riley’s head, who is now a teenager. The Headquarters is undergoing serious transformations to accommodate new emotions. Feszkó appears and it seems that he is not alone.
The second romantic comedy by Gábor Herendi, I Went Running, rated 98% with a revenue of 547 million forints. The main character of the film is a mother (Dorottya Udvaros), who after the death of her husband decides to fulfill his last wish and run a marathon with her daughters (Rozi Lovas, Réka Tenki, Beatrix Trill). The small problem is that none of them are physically or mentally prepared for the run.
The podium is the animation based on Peter Brown’s bestseller Wild Robot, with a revenue of 268 million forints and a rating of 96%. The film is an emotional story about how we can all “surpass our programming” to become more than we were meant to be.
In fourth place was another animation, Moana 2 from Disney, with a revenue of 374 million forints and a 90% approval rating. The musical fantasy adventure film takes Moana and Maui on a journey through the distant lands of Oceania and long-lost waters in this highly anticipated sequel.
Fifth was Dune: Part Two. After Prince Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is rescued, he is destined to avenge his family, but he must decide whether to choose the great love of his life or fulfill his destiny.
In sixth place, we find another Hungarian film, Bálint Szimler’s independent work, Black Point, which received an 82% rating and generated a revenue of 267 million.
The seventh was Deadpool & Wolverine from Marvel Studios, with a revenue of more than 1.5 billion, but with a rating of only 69%.
In the eighth place of the TOP list is another animation, Gru 4, which received a 72% rating with a revenue of 1.1 billion. After a seven-year hiatus, we can welcome a new member of the family, the younger Grút, who is determined to take on his father.
The ninth is the emotional, disturbing and twisty (although it has recently caused a big scandal due to the harassment case exposed by Blake Lively) It Ends With Us with 417 million forints and 75%.
The Planet of the Apes: Rise of the Apes closes the TOP10 with 181 million in revenue and a 71% approval rating.
