The franchise’s producer hinted in a post at the end of the year, hinting at plans for 2025, that this might finally happen… and it’s about time!
Yosuke Saito is the producer of NieR. Understandably, he also worked on the latest console installment of the franchise, NieR: Automaton, which was developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix over seven (or almost eight…) years ago. The game was recently announced by Square Enix to have shipped 9 million units, a feat the Japanese publisher did not expect, and with good sales coupled with excellent critical reviews… it would be perfectly understandable if Square Enix would eventually look to make a sequel.
Before that, NieR was released in 2010, and a remaster with an impossible-to-remember name (Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139) will be released in 2021, but other than that, if you’re not playing on mobile, that’s essentially the end of the NieR franchise for the last decade and a half. Saito’s post goes on to say that 2025 will be the 15th anniversary of NieR, and it sounds like Square Enix has plans for that…
“2025 will be a milestone year as it’s the 15th anniversary of the NieR series, so I’d like to do something for it! What should we do… maybe something with the next game or developments related to it… I’ve heard the expectations of the fans. It’s a bit tricky though. However, since I’ll probably be doing less direct work as a producer, I’d appreciate it if you could be patient for what’s to come,” Saito said.
Even if Square Enix announces a new NieR in 2025 (which may or may not be a sequel to NieR: Automata), it probably won’t be released next year (unless they can keep the development completely secret), so it’s possible it won’t be released until 2026 or 2027. By then, it might not be just for PlayStation 5 and Xbox series, so cross-gen development is also a possibility, meaning it could be in development for PlayStation 6 and next-gen Xbox.
But it’s not official!
