Johnny Depp’s Lawyer Feared a Sudden Outburst Could Derail His Amber Heard Trial

MOVIE NEWS – Over two years have passed since Johnny Depp and Amber Heard faced off in one of the most high-profile court cases ever televised. Despite the time that has elapsed, discussions persist about how both actors conducted themselves during and after the proceedings. While Depp emerged largely victorious, though he faced one defamation charge against him, his legal team admitted they were concerned about whether he could maintain his composure on the stand.

In the A&E special Interrogation Raw: Celebrity Under Oath, Depp’s lawyer Benjamin Chew shared insights into the actor’s courtroom behavior. Though Depp was known for using humor to disarm Amber Heard’s legal team, his attorneys feared he might lose his temper under pressure. Chew stated:

“Johnny’s humor really undercut the seriousness of the points Amber’s lawyers tried to make. We aimed to show the jury his humanity and make them understand that harming someone he loved was unthinkable. But our biggest concern was whether he might lose his temper. The other side was going to push hard to provoke him.”

Despite the relentless questioning from Heard’s team, Depp maintained his composure.

“Cross-examinations often aim to control the witness, but Johnny never allowed [Heard’s attorney Ben Rottenborn] to take that control,” Chew added.

Life After the Depp-Heard Trial

In the years following the courtroom drama, Depp and Heard have taken vastly different paths. After six weeks of intense public scrutiny, both stars stepped back to reassess their futures.

Amber Heard moved to Spain with her daughter to live a quieter life, away from the Hollywood spotlight. Although she appeared in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023, the role was filmed long before the trial and remains her last major cinematic endeavor. While she initially hinted at a return to acting earlier this year, reports in December revealed that she is expecting her second child. Recently, she voiced support for Blake Lively, who filed a lawsuit against Justin Baldoni, who shares a PR firm with Depp.

Meanwhile, Johnny Depp has quietly resumed his work in the film industry. He starred in Jeanne Du Barry and stepped behind the camera to direct Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness. He is rumored to portray Satan in a new Terry Gilliam project, reunite with Penelope Cruz for the thriller Day Drinker, and may yet reprise his iconic role as Jack Sparrow in a future Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
