“We make games for adults.” CD Projekt has revealed that The Witcher 4 will delve into mature themes, including sexism, with the game’s narrative posing challenging questions for players rather than offering simple answers.
While The Witcher 4 is still years away from release, CD Projekt RED has recently shared significant details about the game through various interviews. For instance, we’ve learned about the map’s approximate size, and it’s clear that the studio will continue to focus on complex, thought-provoking themes, some of which will directly involve Ciri.
Game director Sebastian Kalemba and narrative director Philipp Weber told Eurogamer that The Witcher 4 will have a dark tone, addressing intricate topics that Ciri must confront. Players will also play a role in shaping her character through the decisions they make. “The world of The Witcher is truly dark,” Weber remarked when discussing sexism.
“But much like the history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, it was a harsh world for many groups, including women. In The Witcher, we’ve also explored racism against non-humans, and we want to continue addressing that in The Witcher 4. This has always been a crucial aspect of the series. We create games for adults, which means we tackle difficult topics,” Weber explained (via Rock Paper Shotgun).
“We approach these subjects by raising challenging questions rather than offering easy answers. I believe some of these questions will touch on similar issues, as Ciri is a woman in this world, and being a witcher in such a setting is unusual. While sexism may not be a central focus everywhere in the story, it is a part of this world, and we intend to explore various themes, so it will naturally come up.”
Ciri Takes Center Stage in The Witcher 4
“What makes Ciri an exciting new protagonist is that she’s just starting her journey as a witcher. Geralt was already seasoned, having developed his code of neutrality through countless experiences. Ciri, on the other hand, still has much to learn and live through,” said Kalemba. With The Witcher 4, the franchise is entering a new chapter, with its entire narrative revolving around Ciri.
“Even though Ciri is a defined character, players will have the chance to shape her to some extent, especially in how she grows into her role as a witcher and, ultimately, what kind of person she becomes,” added the CD Projekt creative lead. The studio is aware, however, that transitioning from Geralt of Rivia to Ciri as the central character has been met with mixed reactions.
