The producer of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has hinted that Square Enix’s already established multiplatform strategy will also apply to this franchise.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was released on PlayStation 5 earlier this year, and while it showed great test results, it simply wasn’t very bright in terms of sales, so Square Enix is hoping that the PC port, which will arrive in early 2025, will be able to improve on the less than acceptable sales results. This may have contributed to the rethinking of the strategy of the Japanese company (and we are already anxiously waiting to see what the president of the company will write in his open letter that always appears at the beginning of the year…).
Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, told IGN Brazil that Square Enix is pleased with the game’s performance, but added that the modernity of current games puts Square Enix in a position where future Final Fantasy episodes cannot be exclusive to a single platform, so future installments of the franchise will probably be available on multiple platforms upon release, so even the third installment of the Final Fantasy VII remake project could follow a similar path.
“While we are confident and happy that we are reaching a certain level of sales for [Final Fantasy VII Rebirth], it is clear that with the modernity of games, we cannot be exclusive to a single platform. I think we need to offer the game to as many players as possible,” said Kitase, who believes that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth should be offered to as many players as possible, a sentiment that was echoed earlier by director Naoki Hamaguchi when he spoke about bringing Final Fantasy VII Remake to Xbox.
Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Final Fantasy XVI are all not available for the Xbox Series, but given these thoughts, it’s certainly in the plan for the port(s).
