TECH NEWS – Donald Trump’s return as US president could trigger a tech industry shake-up. Sanctions on China and their repercussions are set to raise the cost of gadgets worldwide.
Donald Trump’s potential presidency comeback threatens to reshape the US economic landscape, particularly in the tech sector. In response to Joe Biden’s outgoing policies, China has moved to limit the export of critical minerals essential for technology development. Analysts predict this will lead to dramatic price increases for electronic devices, with both AMD and NVIDIA taking measures to counter a potential 40% price surge.
According to TechSpot, tariffs introduced under Trump’s administration could drive up the cost of graphics cards and other tech gadgets by as much as 40%. To mitigate these effects, AMD and NVIDIA have ramped up GPU production and shipping ahead of the January 20 deadline. These new tariffs will see a general 10-20% import duty and a massive 60% surcharge on products imported from China, aiming to bolster US-based manufacturing.
The China Dependency
Manufacturers are expected to pass on a portion of these costs to consumers, increasing prices for laptops, smartphones, monitors, TVs, and PCs. While NVIDIA and AMD manufacture their chips with TSMC (Taiwan) and Samsung (South Korea), much of the assembly and packaging is done by Chinese companies like Foxconn, Asus, and MSI. To prepare, US companies are ramping up production of their key units.
Unless unforeseen changes occur, NVIDIA plans to unveil its RTX 5000 line at CES 2025, while AMD will debut its Radeon 9000 series. However, due to tariffs, prices are likely to spike; for instance, the RTX 5090’s base price of €1,700 may jump to €2,300 or more. Trump’s tariff policies are poised to directly influence retail tech prices, significantly impacting consumers.
