An older Ubisoft game is being “carpet-bombed” with negative reviews on Steam, and maybe it’s no coincidence.
2017’s Assassin’s Creed: Origins became a very important game in the history of the French publisher’s franchise, and its design is considered by many to be the starting point for the Assassin’s Creed episodes that have been released since. But seven years have passed since then, and since November, many gamers have been experiencing a variety of problems when running Windows 11 on their PCs. We previously reported that Star Wars Outlaws was affected, but the French publisher and Microsoft have released a temporary fix for the underperforming game, so it won’t be a freak-out if you run it on Windows 11 24H2.
Then, on December 13, users on Steam began to give Assassin’s Creed: Origins a lot of negative reviews. That’s when they started discounting the game for the Christmas and holiday season, which continues to struggle with black screens, crashes, hangs, freezes, and yes, it’s still running in a subpar state “courtesy” of the Windows 11 24H2 update released on October 1st, which inspired the design of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed: Origins: Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. But those playing on the Steam Blanket won’t have any problems, as it runs SteamOS, which is Linux-based, and the Proton compatibility layer hasn’t caused any problems.
Meanwhile, the 14th main episode of Assassin’s Creed, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, is in production and will feature two main characters: a shinobi named Naoe, who is the fastest assassin ever, and a black samurai named Yasuke, who is based on a real character and has caused quite a few scandals over the past few months. (We wrote about how some people were calling for the game to be canceled because of him and his inaccurate Japanese historical authenticity).
Meanwhile, one question still hangs over Ubisoft: what will happen to the French publisher? Will Tencent take over?
