Although Team Asobi thought they had created a great PlayStation 5 exclusive, they didn’t expect such success.
Nicolas Doucet, director of Astro Bot, and Team Asobi didn’t expect the game, which launched in September, to shake up the gaming industry enough to win Game of the Year at The Game Awards in December. Released on September 6 on PlayStation 5, the game – a sequel to 2018’s Astro Bot Rescue Mission (PlayStation VR) and 2020’s Astro’s Playroom (PlayStation 5) – managed to beat out a number of big names (Balatro, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Earthtree, Black Myth: Wukong).
Although Doucet was not initially confident of winning the Game of the Year award, he said in an interview with Famitsu that he began to hope after winning the Best Game Director category. At the time, Doucet began sketching out his speech on his smartphone before the final award was announced, and when Astro Bot’s name was called, Doucet looked stunned at the other members of Team Asobi, including Junko Sano, the lead sound designer. Doucet doesn’t remember much about the final moments of the ceremony and his speech because he was so shocked that Astro Bot had won.
But Sano was pleased and felt that the Game of the Year award was an unexpected reward for the positive reception the game had received from fans. As someone who has been involved in the Japanese game industry for a long time, she was also impressed by the number of other Japanese developments nominated for Game of the Year (Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree and Astro Bot were all developed in Japan), in addition to Astro Bot.
Lead Game Designer Hiroaki Yatoku was also pleased to see Astro Bot win Game of the Year. The developers who stayed in Japan watched the live broadcast and were also happy to see their game win. Yatoku watched the moment several times, and like Sano, he didn’t expect to win so many awards (in addition to the two categories already mentioned, it won Best Action/Adventure and Best Family Game).
